Most people spend weeks choosing a lock type and about four minutes deciding where the safe goes. The box arrives, it gets pushed into the bottom of a wardrobe, and the pre-drilled holes in its base stay empty for the next decade.

That decision matters more than the one before it. A burglar working a flat has minutes, not hours, and nobody with sense stands in a stranger's bedroom attacking alloy steel with hand tools. The far easier move is to pick the whole thing up and open it somewhere quiet, with time and better equipment.

Which is why installation is where a safe locker for home use either works or does not. The choice between a wall and a floor comes down to weight, wall material, concealment and whether you are allowed to drill at all.

Why an Unanchored Safe Is Not Really a Safe

Concrete, Brick, Wooden Cabinets and the Surfaces That Fail

Indian construction helps here. Most flats and villas are RCC frames with brick or block infill, which gives you something worth drilling into. Structural concrete takes a sleeve anchor and holds a steel safe locker indefinitely. Solid burnt brick works with proper expansion anchors and a masonry bit, though drilling into the mortar joint rather than the brick face halves the pull-out strength.

The surfaces that fail are the hollow ones. Gypsum partition walls, hollow concrete block, AAC block without the right chemical anchor, and any dry-wall stud arrangement in a modern interior fit-out. A plastic wall plug in a hollow block will hold a 3 kg unit and pull straight out under 13 kg, usually months later, usually taking a chunk of the wall with it.

Wardrobe joinery is the grey area. Bolting into a 19mm ply plinth is fine for concealment and useless against force. Bolt through the plinth into the slab underneath if the layout allows it.

Where to Put It: Moisture, Visibility, Signal and Door Clearance

Avoid external walls in coastal cities and anywhere that gets driven by monsoon rain. Damp migrating through masonry reaches a safe bolted flat against it, and paper and silver both suffer quietly for years before anyone notices.

Ground-floor placement in flood-prone areas needs the unit lifted, which is one of the few genuine arguments for wall mounting a mid-size safe.

Keep it out of sight from the door and away from the master bedroom's obvious corner, which is the first place anyone looks. A home security safe behind a wardrobe back panel buys you the minutes that matter.

Connected models need a signal. If you are installing a Wi-Fi unit inside a steel-lined cabinet on the far side of the flat from the router, test the connection before you drill anything.

After installation, test it. Grip the safe and pull hard, from the front and from each side. Open and close the door fully. Enter the code with the door open, then closed. Then try to rock the unit. Any movement at all means the anchor is not right, and finding that out now is better than finding out later.
